Review: Lost Planet 3 (DarkZero)

"The Lost Planet series and I have had our shares of ups and downs. I adored the first game, but loathed the second. When the original game released on the Xbox 360 there was a sense of next-gen about it - the gorgeous looking ice world, the grappling hook mechanic, huge, exhilarating monster battles, and of course, you could pilot a mecha-like robot. Lost Planet was a cool (pardon the pun) and exciting third-person shooter. Then Lost Planet 2 arrived and I was hugely disappointed in the direction Capcom had taken the sequel. The single player was the main reason why I loved Lost Planet, so to have that stripped away and replaced with a focus on cooperative play, well, you can imagine my upset. Sure, Lost Planet 2 was fun with friends, but I felt that the smaller stages were broken up too much. Now were on to the third instalment, created by a different development team, Spark Unlimited, who doesn't exactly have a proven track record (Legendary, Turning Point: Fall of Liberty),...

"Lost Planet 3 is a prequel to the first title in the series, developed with a fresh perspective by Spark Unlimited. The game is once again set on E.D.N. III, but you wont be seeing any green pastures here this is a return to the frozen, dangerous ice planet that is originally was. Co-op has also been forgone in order to tell a volved, personal, single-player story that uncovers the secrets of E.D.N. IIIs first colonisation by NEVEC. A multiplayer suite is also included, featuring four main team-based modes and a unique unlock tree. With all that said, is the pursuit of T-Energy a worthy cause for humanity, or does it just lead to us frozen to death?"

Leon from Plus XP writes "The Lost Planet series has a bit of a funny place in the gaming market - with fairly low sales, they have reached something of a cult status, and with me being a part of that niche market, I was glad to hear that Capcom decided to have a third crack at Akrid hunting on E.D.N. III.
However, theres a bit of a divide between the fans of Lost Planet some loved the originals freezing climate and narrative-driven campaign, while others fell for the lush environments and arcade-style co-op story mode - Im one of the few people I know of that actually loves both, for all of those reasons. My ideal Lost Planet title would be the setting and storyline of the first, with the additional co-op and replay value of the second. So when I heard that Lost Planet 3 would be a prequel set in the extreme conditions of the original, I was interested to see what it would bring to the series. This week, I got my hands on a copy to find out."

Capcom's Lost Planet series is one of those perennial underachievers. It always seems like it should be a AAA-caliber title, yet never quite makes it regardless of how entertaining the games wound up being. With Lost Planet 3, a game which serves as a prequel to the two previous titles, it appears that underachieving is simply status quo for the franchise.

GamingLives takes a look at the third installment in the Lost Planet series, the icy prequel.
"Lost Planet 3 isn't a bad game as such...just a boring one. Interesting and well-developed characters aren't enough to save it from crushing boredom and uninteresting systems. The most damning thing of all is that it manages to make mechs boring; something that should be, frankly, nigh on impossible."
